Projects - Southeast European Database of NGOs

Report on the
Southeast European Database of NGOs

http://www.see-database.org

In June 2003 the CDRSEE (under the auspices of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and the Hellenic EU Presidency) launched a Database of NGOs, Experts, and Institutions that work towards reconciliation in Southeast Europe. It is a database of actors in the Balkan region working on conflict prevention, conflict resolution, democratic institution building and many other activities that assist the process of reconciliation. It is funded by the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Included are NGOs that work in various areas of democratization, politics, economics, human rights, education, youth, media, gender equality, inter-religious dialogue and arts & culture. The database is also focused on the area of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, FY Republic of Macedonia, Serbia & Montenegro including Kosovo), an area which has been the focus of the international community's efforts since the nineteen-nineties.

Most of the information was provided by the relevant NGOs themselves that submitted or updated their information. Supplementary research was conducted by CDRSEE staff and a team of interns in our organization. An interested feature of this project is the existence of links with other databases operating in the Internet with similar content as well as the preparation of a section including potential donor organizations. In this way, the database becomes a valuable tool that can help all interested parties. Furthermore, the database is searchable in many categories and has the capability of a mass mailing option, configured by different criteria, with the potential to serve as a disseminator of news and ideas to all relevant actors.

The maintenance and development of the database aims to support reconciliation and cross-border co-operation and inter-ethnic understanding and tolerance. The database is constantly updated and expanded. At the and of December 2003 it boasted around 380 entries and continues to attract the interest of many organisations from the Balkans and those international ones that are involved with activities in the Balkans. The NGO database gets around 300 hits per month proving in this way its effectiveness and value for the process of reconciliation in the region.
