Smarande Enache
Smaranda Enache, born in 1950 in Targu Mures, Transylvania,
Romania, is currently the Co-Chair of the Association LIGA PRO EUROPA
- Romania.
She served as Ambassador of Romania to Finland and Estonia
(1998-2001).
Graduated of the University of Bucharest in 1973, she worked
as professor of French literature and dramaturge.
Founder in 1989 of Romanian's first pro-European movement
(Liga Pro Europa). Founding member of Romania's first post communist association
(The Civic Alliance).
Member of the Romanian Group for Social Dialogue and of
the Romanian Helsinki Committee.
She served as member on the board of various Bucharest based
NGOs (Foundation for the Development of the Civil Society, Institute for
Public Policies, Open Society Foundation) as well as on the board of international
foundations (Civitas International-Strasbourg, European Centre for Minority
Issues-Flensburg, Germany), the Liberal International's Human Rights Commission.
Editor of the weekly Gazeta de Mures (1991-93).
Author of the "Romania and the Minorities" compendium
(1997).
Presently co-editor of the academic quarterly on minority
issues "Altera".
She participated as expert in conflict prevention missions
in Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, etc.
She played a key role in the Romanian-Hungarian historical
reconciliation process.
For her activity in support of democracy and interethnic
tolerance, she received various international awards and decorations.
She has a son, Stefan Sebastian.
Her husband, Elek Szokoly graduated in philosophy and serves
as director of the Intercultural Centre in Targu Mures.
She is fluent is French, Hungarian and English, fair in
Italian and German, understands Russian and Spanish
